Virtual, augmented and mixed reality, 3D modeling, printing and scanning will all bring bew opportunities to businesses everywhere. It is very important to look into these subjects while studying so as to know the right questions later. More than a thousand students have taken our 3D Basic modeling course, which makes it the most popular free elective course in the University. We use the open source, versatile and powerful Blender modeling software.

ESP32 based network time clock with 0.96″OLED display

3D printing brings the benefits of rapid prototyping to everyone. Our Lab is well furnished with multiple FDM printers which use many types of filaments, and we can produce prototypes fast. In addition to wire printing, we have a Formlabs Form 3 resin printer for detailed and intricate prints. For scanning large objects, our Artec EVA handheld scanner can produce amazing detail and textured models, while smaller objects can be scanned with our home made photogrammetry based HD webcam scanner. For work in virtual reality, we have five pairs of Oculus Quest 2 128GB glasses, and an Apple iPad Pro LIDAR 3D scanner for room sized scans.

IoT (Internet of Things) is yet another subject that is turning from hype into everyday projects. Especially with the ever expanding 5G network, attaching remote devices to the Internet is easier than ever. Now we can measure dozens of different values in the environment and act on them remotely. Our 3D + Robo Lab is suitable for students to research and design IoT devices, build them, and print custom boxes for them. This gives them a great view into the opportunities that IoT provides.

Students designing robots

When we start in robotics, we use Arduinos, which are open source, cost only 2€ each, and provide a stable and easy to understand platform for beginners. When the three basic concepts of robotics (sensing the environment, deciding how to act, and acting on the data) are understood, we move on to ESP32 or Raspberry PI, which are connectable to the Internet and allow for building true IoT devices. It is simply astonishing how wide the field of low cost sensors and actuators is, and how varied devices can be built using very basic sensing and actuating devices. We have amassed a veritable hoard of different sensors in order to be able to provide just the device you need.

So, please get in touch with us and see what the Haaga-Helia 3D + Robo Lab can build for you!

Haaga-Helia 3D + Robo Lab is the 3D, Robotics and IoT research laboratory at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences. 3D is a topic that concerns all possible fields today.
