Haaga-Helia 3D + Robo Lab is the 3D, robotics and IoT research lab at our University.
3D is a family of technologies that can be seen to affect every field of business today. Virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, 3D modeling, scanning and printing open new business opportunities every day. Therefore it is vital to get acquainted with these technologies during one’s studies, so as to be able to ask all the right questions when entering the job market.
More than 1,000 students have taken the Basic 3D Modeling with Blender free elective course, and that makes it the most popular elective course at Haaga-Helia UAS. The environment we use, Blender 3D, is very versatile and powerful, and since it is open source software, it will be available to the students even after they graduate.
3D printing brings the benefits of rapid prototyping. We have several FDM wire printers at the Lab, as well as one SLA resin printer for detailed work. With these tools we can churn out prototypes fast and efficiently. We also have a handheld 3D scanner, Artec EVA, and for small objects, we have a custom built photogrammetry 3D scanner. For virtual reality projects we have five pairs of Oculus Quest 2 128GB glasses, and an Apple iPad Pro LIDAR 3D scanner.
IoT (Internet of Things) is yet another ubiquitous topic these days. Especially with the advent of the 5G network, it will be easier than ever to connect devices to the Internet, both to measure a wide variety of environment variables, and to act on the measurement data too. The 3D + Robo Lab allows companies to design and build complete IoT prototypes with students doing the brunt of the work.
Teaching robotics begins with a simple Arduino device, and after the three basic functions of robotics (sensing, deciphering and acting) are learned, we move on to more complicated robotic projects. If need be, we will turn to ESP32s or Raspberry PIs which have Internet connectivity. It is simply unbelievable how many types of sensors can be attached to these devices, and what functionalities can be built with very little money. We have acquired significant stores of sensors and actuators, with which we can build whatever devices our clients may ask for.
