Introduction to the team 3 – 29.3.2022

Our main goal is to build a portable GPS weather station for Madrid 2022 seminar. If that name confuses you, don’t worry! During this course we’ll be documenting everything here, so you get a comprehensive idea of this machine! But alas, let’s start with a quick introduction to our team! Our team is composed of two IT students, Njumbe Ediage Donald and Samuli Normo.

Njumbe Ediage Donald

I major in software development and I’m two semesters away from completing my studies. I studied accounting and finance in my previous studies and wanted to major in physics but didn’t have the opportunity to in the past. After my initial studies here in Finland and upon integration, I decided to study programming because of the immense creative potential involved. I loved the idea of building things and making them work. Digitally, through websites and applications, I have had the opportunity to do that through my previous work experience as a software engineer. I have always heard of the IoT and never had the slightest idea what it meant really, through this course I hope to fill that blank and gain great knowledge as a foundational base to move forward. It would have been nicer to understand the physics behind each component, break it down and build it back up. Physics and programming working hand in hand is a wonderful experience I’d love to explore.

Samuli Normo

I’m a last-year student of information technology and I’ve majored in service design, but for the last 12 months, I’ve shifted my focus towards 3d design and IoT. I’ve been involved in multiple projects, where we design and print props for the national broadcasting company. These props have been varied in the technical aspect. This is why I’m enrolled in this course, I want to learn the full potential of IoT and apply my skills in service design to our project. I don’t have a lot of practical experience in this field, but I’m eager to learn and I think is a wonderful opportunity!

But now, back to the topic! In the beginning, we had some technical difficulties getting the software working properly. This was hindering our progress but we managed to overcome these issues. We started to reverse engineer a prototype and figure out how each piece affected the other. We thought it would be smarter to build our own prototype this way and not from the scratch. Under here you can see some photos from the beginning of the process.

To be continued…
